Purple Cactus
I'm not sure my self-imposed deadline thing is working.  I started with a bang, then began to get serious side effects regarding the dry eye problem, which is getting worse instead of better.  It's hard to concentrate on developing a character and plot when every time you blink it feels as though the edge of a knife is being dragged across the surface of your left eyeball (then add feeling like you have several sharp shards of sand in it besides).  We're going to try a call to the opthamologist tomorrow and see what, if anything, can be done to get our insurance to allow me to see him again... assuming such a visit would actually accomplish anything.  Eye drops burn and make the eye blurry, thereby making me even more cranky and miserable.  ::hmph::

In the meantime, the living things in the yard are enjoying the warm days and cool nights that have finally arrived.  A few pictures from the Spring 2007 Gallery:

There's more if you follow the Gallery link above-- I didn't want to bog down the LJ.

The baby bunny?  It was in play-dead mode and our highly hunter-oriented dogs (especially Ghost, who theoretically has a much more developed sense of smell because she's deaf) literally walked right over it.  The only thing that would have been funnier would have been if they picked up their toes like it was a mud puddle.  The bunny could have fit in my cupped hand.

Upper right: Flying Saucer Cactus.  SEVEN blooms at once.  The cactus was much chubbier originally, and the blooms sucked everything out of it.  If you click on the photo, you'll note the stick I had to use to prop it up because it was literally bending in the middle from the weight of the blooms.  Oh, and at this point it was still in the way small pot we bought it in, because we were afraid transplanting it during the bloom would harm it.

Top left: Ghost.  She appreciates the flowers, too.

And finally, bottom right (no, I don't have to go in order, so there): CHERRY TOMATOES in our potted containers!  Three of them on this plant, one on another, buds on yet another.  And we have jalapeno buds on our pepper plant!  Clearly we need to buy 80 acres and start farming.

And overalls.  Yeah, we need overalls.

WOW your plants are lovely! And that is SUCH a cute pic of Ghost smelling the flower. I pulled into a parking lot and was surprised when the Toyota next to me let out an earth-shaking WOOF. There was a totally adorable black-and-white spotted Dane sticking its humongous nose out through the window. Looked like a gigantic canine cow!

That little cactus that Ghost is smelling is un-frackin'-believable. It now has another 16 (yes, SIXTEEN) bloom buds on it! I think it's tapped into a steroid vein in the ground or some damned thing.

Did you pet the Harlequin? Ghost is the result of backyard breeders trying to breed two Harleys-- white, blue-eyed, and stone deaf. As for the airhead part, we think she did that all on her own. ha ha

16 BUDS??? That's AWESOME! See, if I could grow cactus, maybe I'd have a few flowers this year, because the pups wouldn't have EATEN them all.

I sure did pet the Dane. So the black-and-white critters are called Harlequins, huh? He looked just like a Holstein! I'm always respectful of doggies in their person's cars--sometimes they feel like they need to defend their territory, and that's cool. But this cutie-pie was trying to squeeze out the window to give me a kiss, so I had to love on him. I didn't worry about his being in the car, because the windows were open a good 10 inches and it was cool and rainy out. I wish I'd met his people, I wanted to ask his name!

So ghost is deaf? I know that blue-eyed white cats are often deaf--must be the same type of gene. Carmen was mostly deaf during the last year of her life. Strangely, though, she could always still hear the can opener...

Yep. That does not, however, stop her from barking if she feels a vibration.

Here is a good example of trying to squeeze out a window. Check out "Scoob."

Hey Yvonne

Those are some beautiful plants. We've tried to get a garden going but all we can grow are rocks and weeds.
About the dry eyes: There's a product we keep around the office that's named Natures Tears. It works for me. I get dry eyes from not getting enough sleep for weeks at a time.
If you've been getting this repeatedly definitely see a doctor. Your sight is nothing to play around with. You don't want to find out too late that it was something serious.

Take Care
Have Fun

Cool on the crops!!

We were just in Marfa visiting Rachel and (are you sitting down?) her HUSBAND, Chase, who have just bought a ranch house and five acres just outside town. One of the many things we sprung for over the weekend were numerous tomato plants, hot peppers, some squashes... They want to start a small garden plot and sell extras at the Saturday local market. You cannot believe how ambitious these two are!

By the way, the happy couple eloped...you-know-who is NOT as happy about that as she might be! LOL!

I really DO owe you a big, fat, juicy email, don't I? Soon. I promise!

Aw, thanks! (Although I can't take any credit for the beauty part!) And in every picture of the event, she looks so happy. I'm sure I will have many *interesting* stories after the August 4 bash...

Ditto the others about the lovely blooms -- some very nice pics!

I saw this article today and thought of your dry eye problem.

Great article -- thanks, Lucy. If I was in the area, I'd said "HEY -- INCLUDE ME!!!"

Hello, just returned from 5 days in Rome. Amazing!!

Your garden looks fantastic. Those Home Depot cactii are just thriving now. Any rumours of cactuscide are greatly exagerated.

Loved the reference to Ghost hunter instincts :)

Ciao

Hi - so sorry about the eyes. Go to the pharmacy and buy a product called Soothe. My eye doc recommended it for me and its wonderful. Its over the counter, and works like a charm. (Can't use it while contacts are in) I put it in at night and waking up is alot better. You could also put it in the first thing in the morning for relief....good luck

Whoa, I *love* the new format you have here! So sorry to have been such a stranger... the piccies are fab, though. I got a ton of blooms on the cactus in the back yard too -- must've been last year's wet, in my case.

Good luck with the eye issues and writing. Keep it up, girlfriend -- if I am writing (a sure sign of the apocalypse), you SURE as hell oughta be able to! I was having eye issues awhile ago (not dry eye tho) and have totally stopped wearing eye makeup until I can get it looked at. It comes and goes, so hard to bring up to the doc.

What beautiful pictures! Our hedgehog cactus has been spewing forth lots of red blooms for days. I've been watering it and that rain from the other week really set it off! I don't care what they say, cactuses love water!
Our construction is going really slow. The deck itself is finished, but the stairwell is taking for ever. I hope it's finished before the monsoons. I'm tired.

Will do, but now I have to wait for another flurry of blooms. The cactus blooms at night and then the flowers die as soon as it gets hot. I have to trim off the dead blooms before more come up. The coolest thing is the buds look like the alien plant from 'Little Shop of Horrors'.
( Grumble! )
